The curly state of curly hair corresponds to the appearance of natural curly hair, when the curls unite and arrange themselves into strands of hair to create uniform spiral locks.

Curly hair can pass:

  • from a curly to a frizzy state with a simple detangling.
  • from a curly or frizzy state to a locked (locs) state by letting the curls knot or by tying them,
  • from a stretched/relaxed state to a curled state thanks to water/humidity,
  • from a curly state to a straight state by stretching the hair with thread, elastics, nourishment and hydration, or heat,
  • from the curled state to the looped state by defining the loops.

Thanks to the natural versatility of curly hair , we have a choice between different looks depending on our daily routines, our care choices, our desires, our lifestyles and our cultures:

  • the locked/locs state (tangled loops),
  • the looped state (natural loops defined),
  • the frizzy state (disjointed curls),
  • the stretched state (relaxed curls).

When you have hair described as "curly," "kinky," "3ABC," "4ABC," or "African/Afro," you naturally have curls (spirals). There is simply a variation in size and a difference in visibility from a distance.

1. Hydration & Nutrition

The degree of hydration and nutrition of natural curly hair also helps to determine its ability to form curls, spirals or waves.

The more hydrated curly hair is, the more naturally the curls will form. Dry curly hair will stabilize in its original state, allowing you to style it without using any special products.

2. The different sizes of loops

We all have different sized curls in the same head of hair, depending on the area, some smaller, some larger. Our curls reflect the vitality of our hair and allow it to adapt to different climates and our personal preferences.

There are very small loops:

Hair is often referred to as "4C" hair, "4Z" hair, kinky hair , "frizzy hair", nappy hair , "African hair", "curly hair", "versatile hair", "wavy hair" or even "cloud", "crown", etc.

There are the small loops:

Hair is often referred to as "4C", "4B" or "4A" hair, kinky hair , "frizzy hair", nappy hair , "African hair", "curly hair", "versatile hair", "wavy hair" or even "cloud", "crown", etc.

There are medium-sized loops:

Often called “3C”, “3B” or “3A” hair, curly hair , kinky hair , “frizzy hair”, nappy hair , “African hair”, “frizzy hair”, “versatile hair”, “curly hair”, “mixed-race hair” or even “cloud”, “crown”, etc.

There are the large loops:

3. Shrinkage

Shrinkage is an English term used in the West by many people with naturally curly or kinky hair. It refers to the process by which curly hair can shrink or stretch, automatically reforming its natural curl pattern when wet. This process alters the appearance of the hair: even if the actual length of the hair may be two to five times greater, the hair appears visually shorter.

The smaller the curls, the shorter the hair appears, regardless of its actual length.

For hair with very small, small and medium curls:

You have the advantage of a great ability to go from very short hair to very long hair without having to cut your hair, thanks to the magic of shrinkage (the ability of natural curly hair to stretch or shrink).

The more the curls are separated from each other, the more they shrink—especially the smaller ones. The visual appearance can therefore easily give the impression of a short haircut.

However, the actual length of curly hair, once stretched, can be up to five times its apparent length. The smaller the curls, the greater the shrinkage .

For hair with large or very large curls:

If you naturally have very large curls that are visible from a distance, you have less shrinkage (the ability of natural curly hair to stretch or contract, creating a springy effect) compared to hair with small or medium curls, as shown in the video below. The actual length of your hair is almost entirely apparent. Hair growth is more noticeable because the hair shrinks less. Therefore, shrinkage is less of a surprise than with other curl sizes.

With large curls, you have less flexibility in transitioning from short to long hair without cutting it. This is because shrinkage is less pronounced, and the curls are wider within a single strand, leaving more smooth sections. The actual length of the hair is less concealed, but not as fully revealed as with straight hair. Hair growth is more noticeable because the hair shrinks less, and the shrinkage is less of a surprise than with other curl sizes.

4. How to reveal/define your natural curls?

For hair with very small, small and medium curls:

Untangled curls, not revealed

Defined, revealed curls

Hair only begins to curl on its own when it is damp, wet, or properly hydrated and nourished. Once dry, it will hold the shape you have created.

It's best to detangle your hair with your fingers to create groups of curls. This will make the curls more defined and visible, even from a distance, depending on their size. Small curls are best showcased when the strands are together. The more the strands are separated, the greater the volume, and the more their visibility from a distance varies depending on the size of the curls.

When defining curls, the thickness of the hair strands is chosen according to the natural size of the curls. Therefore, the smaller your curls, the more it is recommended to work with small strands, so that the hair forms springs rather than locs.

For hair with large or very large curls:

With this type of curl, the curls are visible from both near and far. However, they can also appear wavy or even straight, depending on the care and techniques used. It's damp, wet, or well-hydrated, slightly oily hair that naturally curls. Once dry, the hair holds the shape you've created.

It's best to detangle your hair with your fingers to form groups of curls. This will make the curls more defined and visible from a distance, depending on their size.

EXAMPLE: Here (image below), the strands are very uniform and the hair is very hydrated and nourished, therefore heavy and supple. This prevents volume and the formation of spirals, and the hair has a wavy texture.

A magical hair with a multitude of stunning looks to choose from.
