Here is some information and images of hair with beautiful, large curls, showing different states of this type of curl, to better understand the versatility of curly hair. Keep in mind that a head of hair contains at least two different curl sizes (wider or narrower).

1/ How to reveal your natural curls?

For this type of curl size, they are already visible from a distance or up close. But they can have a wavy or even straight appearance, depending on the care and techniques used. It's damp, wet, or well-hydrated and slightly oily hair that is most likely to curl on its own. Once dry, the hair settles into the shape it was left in. It's best to detangle your hair with your fingers to create groups of curled sections. This will make the curls more defined and visible from a distance, depending on their size.

If you want to make curls invisible, create volume, or achieve the cloud-like effect of natural hair, you need to brush, comb, or backcomb them. The more the hair strands are separated, the more volume the curls will have and the less visible they will be from a distance once detangled.

Detangling wet hair with a brush or comb makes it appear wavy rather than curly and slightly shorter than its actual length. But once dry, the hair shrinks. It shrinks a little more, and the curls form. So, even if the hair is long when relaxed or weighed down by moisture, the curl pattern remains visible.

To maintain the wavy appearance, good hair nutrition is necessary, or an adequate amount of natural hair sebum for those who have naturally oily hair.

2/ Shrinkage and versatility

In comparison to the video below, hair with large curls has less ability to go from short to long without having to cut your hair, because of the magic of shrinkage (the ability of natural curly hair to stretch or shrink, the spring effect).

The shrinkage is less intense and the curls are wider on the same strand, there are more smooth spaces.

The actual length of the hair is less hidden, but not fully revealed like with straight hair. Hair growth is more visible sooner because the hair shrinks less. The shrinkage is slightly less noticeable than with other curl sizes.

Because the curls are wider and less tight, creating locs is entirely possible. Using tools (e.g., crochet hooks, etc.) may be necessary depending on the desired size of the locs. The natural versatility of curly hair also allows you to create your signature voluminous, slightly flowing cloud of hair with a kinky texture, simply by detangling your curls.

Large, curly hair can be very voluminous and have more body when it's long, well-detangled, and dry. Curls that are separated with a brush or comb become undefined and uniform. And because shrinkage is minimal, the volume is created more along the length than the height.

But when hair is well-hydrated and nourished, or when it's naturally oily or not, it can take on a wavy appearance and reduced volume if the curls are less defined. It becomes heavier, droops, and the curls looser.

This type of loop allows you to create a multitude of styles, just like all the different loop sizes.

Thanks to the natural versatility of curly hair in all curl sizes, we have a choice between different looks depending on our daily routines, hair care choices, desires, lifestyles and cultures:

  • the locked state / locs (tangled loops),

  • the closed state (natural loops defined),

  • the stretched state (loose curls)
  • the frizzy state (disjointed curls),

These beautiful curly locks allow for a multitude of styles to suit every mood and desire 😍. Magical! 💫
