Here are some images of old photographs of communities wearing a Boules Boules hairstyle, from different eras, ethnic traditions, cultures.

Some photographs, originally in black and white, have been partially or entirely colourized by the graphic designer AGOBO.

The "bouclé bouclé" hairstyle involves tying short hair close to the roots, in several sections, creating fractal patterns (half-circles, triangles, squares, etc.) . The hair for this hairstyle should be curly to achieve the appearance of pom-poms or natural balls. This doesn't give the same result with straight hair or large curls.

The balls are also made with clay in some communities.

The "ball" or "poop" hairstyle of sheep, goat, and kid also has a multitude of names depending on the language and region of the world, such as:

  • "Klui-Klui" in Togo,
  • "Ponpon" in Guinea (Conakry),
  • "Gbofloto" (Translation: Doughnuts), "Boules boules" in Ivory Coast,
  • "Toufi ya ntaba" in Lingala (Translation: Goat dung) in the Congos (Brazzaville & Kinshasa),
  • "Macabo" in Cameroon.
