The Different Names of Hairstyles

There are many languages in the world, so people give this hairstyle different names than the English name "Frohawk." The term is used by some Black English-speaking communities, but especially in the United States and the West these days.

"Frohawk" is a contraction of Afro and the Mohawk Native American ethnic group wore this hairstyle.

In French, the hairstyle is called "Crête " or "Crête Iroquoise " in reference to the Iroquois Native American people who also wore this style. This means leaving the hair only along the central part of the head, from top to bottom. The two sides of the head are slicked back, braided, or shaved.

This hairstyle is also worn in Africa, Oceania, and Asia in many communities by adults and very often by babies or toddlers. It was most often boys who wore this hairstyle due to ethnic traditions at the time.

Creating the Mohawk Hairstyle

The hairstyle can also be achieved with locs; barrel twists are sometimes added. The mid-length hair can be left loose, or it can be styled with locs, buns, Bantu knots, braids, twists, etc.
