Depending on the size of the locomotives, there are different names, for example:

  • Microlocs/Microlocks for fine locs.

  • Free form for hair left loose that transforms into locs on its own.

Locs Hairstyle Creation

Locs are a hairstyle, but also a natural look , a state of naturally curly hair . The smaller the locs, the more easily they can cling to each other and knot together, if we let our curly hair do its thing.

For more information on the different sizes of natural curls, click here.

There are different techniques for creating locs:

  • With tools like the crochet hook , for example, to create knots quickly . But the locs take longer to fall out.

  • Locs can be created when certain hairstyles are kept for a certain time and after several washes, such as twists/vanillas/cornrows.

For very short hair, locs can be started with a Coils/Tortilles hairstyle. There are also tools like sponges, gloves and hair rackets.

  • Braids are sometimes also used for starting locs.

  • Letting your hair loose is ideal; if you have curly hair, the curls will easily form their own locs. The smaller the curls are naturally, the more structured and well-defined the hair is without styling. (Especially if the curls are already well-defined and you don't comb or brush them, just detangle them with your fingers).

For adjustment and creation at the roots, there are different techniques:

  • The locomotives can be turned by hand.

  • Locs can be rolled in the palm of the hand.

  • Locs can be knotted around themselves with a blunt-tipped needle for thin locs.

  • Locs can be tied with a crochet hook.

  • Natural or synthetic waxes can be used to rotate roots, depending on the individual. However, some products may leave residue, and others can weaken the roots. It's a personal choice, not a necessity for root care.

  • Many rely solely on shaping the roots with water , taking advantage of the ability of wet, curly hair to easily stabilize in a fixed state once dry , to tighten the roots. The locs, twisted at the root, are then secured with clips, elastics, etc., until the roots dry. Alternatively, the locs are braided, rolled, and styled into a "roll" hairstyle.

Locs Hairstyle Lifespan

  • From 1 day to several years.

Advantages of Locs Hairstyle

  • It brings out a person's natural beauty.

  • It makes the person radiant.

  • Allows you to have falling hair.

  • Allows you to have very, very long hair without extensions, straightening or braiding.

  • Allows for the wearing of hair jewelry.

  • Allows you to create many hairstyles (braids, twists, bantu knots, barrel twists, curls, etc.)

  • Can be worn on very short to long hair.

  • Free form locs allow hair to choose its appearance.

  • Allows you to avoid having loose, curly hair.

  • Allows you to always have your hair done without doing anything.

  • Allows for hair to fall out over time and with length.

  • Allows you to create a multitude of hairstyles without necessarily stretching or detangling the hair.

  • Locs are easily created with curly hair, especially hair with very small curls.

  • The lack of daily or weekly detangling helps to maintain hair growth.

  • Microlocs allow for a wider range of hairstyles thanks to their fineness. Unlike regular or very thick locs, the natural stretching and shrinking capacity of curly hair is not completely blocked.

  • Allows you to take a break/pause from hair manipulations.

  • Locs can come undone depending on their thickness, the starting base, and the techniques used to tighten the roots. It requires a lot of patience.

Disadvantages of Locs Hairstyles

  • Locs can collect dust if the hair isn't protected before bed. Therefore, it's important to regularly do deep cleaning with a solution of baking soda and apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, even if you wash your hair very often.

  • Gel residues can remain in the hair despite shampooing, as is the case with loose, curly hair.

  • Very long locomotives can be heavy to carry, especially when wet.

  • Locs can take several days to air dry, especially if you have very long hair and live in a place with little heat or sun.

  • Washing long locs can take time, as can drying them.

  • Not being able to have your hair free when you want and being restricted on certain hairstyles like the afro, the afro puff, certain styles of braids.

  • Not being able to play with all the natural versatility of your hair when you have curly hair. For example, shrinkage. Playing with your ability to make your hair shorter or longer at will.

  • Not being able to enjoy the versatility of curly hair with its kinky, wavy, and stretched states, in addition to the natural loc'd state. More information on the different types of curly hair can be found here.

  • The time taken to undo locs of several months or years, especially those made with crochet (several days, weeks or even months depending on the number, thickness, and length of the locs. Especially if you are doing it alone) .

  • Some locs can break, tear themselves out at the root.

  • Some people cut their locs as they get older in case of baldness.

  • Feeling obliged to rotate your locs very often (if the hair grows quickly) for people who adapt well-defined roots, rotated without regrowth.

  • The budget required for root maintenance if you don't know how to do it or don't know anyone who can. If you feel the need to do it frequently.

  • When starting crochet locs, they may not fall out easily for several months, especially when starting with short hair.

  • When starting locs with crochet, twists, or coils, you lose a little visual hair length during the creation of the locs.
